Butterwalk derives its name from the old Butterwalk, a Tudor colonnaded and covered section of street that originally protected dairy traders from the weather. In homage to its history the shop Butterwalk also is intended to provide a roof over independent businesses. In Totnes the local economy has always supported and thrived through the selling of artisan products. Butterwalk is likewise always going to be a roof over many makers to further the sense of discovery and knowledge that comes with this trade.
